Oldest Person in New Gretna- Part 1

Tom Doherty sent me this email a few days ago, and it got me to thinking about who the oldest person currently living in New Gretna and/or the oldest person with New Gretna roots might be. Renard Wiseman, who I believe was the oldest New Gretna resident, recently passed away at age 94. 
My Mom (Marie Bishop Doherty) who grew up in my house in New Gretna (the old homestead of Irene and Sylvester Bishop), did some analysis yesterday and concluded that actually she is now the oldest person left on Earth with strong connections to that town.   So, though I have left New Gretna to visit down here (Yorktown, Va.), actually, I'm still in New Gretna.   No one leaves New Gretna once they arrive.   New Gretna gets in the blood, and then becomes an infectious disease which has no cure, other than an eventual return to it.   - Tom
I'm sorry to burst Tom's bubble regarding his mom being the oldest person with New Gretna ties, but Bennie Allen will be 91 this December 10th. Ben was born in New Gretna and lived here all his life. By my calculations that would make him 11 years older than Marie McAnney Doherty, Tom's mom. 

Anyone know of a New Gretna-ite [just invented a new word] who is older than Ben?    - Pete S.

New Gretna Boy Makes Good- Harold Altscher

I got the following email from David Altscher the other day and thought I would pass the good news along to all you blog readers. David and his brother, Harold, grew up on a chicken farm on North Maple Avenue in New Gretna in the 1950's.  You can find a story that David wrote about his childhood in New Gretna on page 3 of Issue #10 of  the "Bass River Gazette" at the following web address:

Bass River State Park Stone Mystery

Hello,

First I would like to say how much I enjoy all the great and useful information on the Bass River history webpage, it has taught me alot and it is so well put together. I have a question about a stone that I came across a few years back near the firemens memorial off of Greenbush rd. The stone is marked WP 1700 and on the back it is marked JM 1742. Could this be a John Mathis property stone? This has been a mystery to me for a long time and I was wondering if maybe you could help me. I can send you pictures if you are interested. Thanks for your time!

I'm familiar with the marker. Attached are two photos, one on each side of the marker. They were taken in 2002. The JM is for John Mathis and the WP is for William Pancoast. It is a marker from an old survey.

My Sears Mayflower Descendants- John Yates

Happy Black Friday!

My family tree has some roots in New Gretna. Sears, Allen, Mathis, Cra(n)mer, Leek, Gauntt. I'll stop there for now! ;-)

Last night I had Thanksgiving with four generations of direct Mayflower descendants! If you descend from a New Gretna Sears, you too are likely a descendant of William Brewster.

I look forward to seeing Bass River genealogy and history discussed here.

And thanks to Pete for all his dedicated hard work preserving Bass River Township history!

Thanksgiving 2008

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Every year, I find myself busier than ever so I didn't even have a minute to get online! I think my family feared that I wouldn't get off!! Anyway, just wanted to send belated Thanksgiving wishes to all of you out there! And now....we are officially moving full swing into Christmas!!

For you island girls out there...this weekend is the big Islandwide Craft & Food Expo at the Neil Blaisdell Center. I will be at the show all weekend, helping my friends Carri & Eric at the BERRY SWEET BATH & BODY BOOTHS # 194 and 195...so if you are planning on going to the show to get do some shopping, be sure to come by and say hello to me, k?? Of course, if I've never met you before, please introduce yourself to me! At the Made in Hawaii show, I met 2 island gals that follow my blog and it was such a thrill for me to meet them in person!!

For those of you who are braving the midnight specials, I hope after your afternoon nap, you come down to the Blaisdell to check it out!!

Time to go to work now...yup! I work today...but that's okay... my sister and I will be running to Macy's at 6:30 am when we get off the bus just to check out the morning specials!

I am thankful to ALL OF YOU!! More projects to come...

A New Gretna Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Origami card tutorial

Happy Wednesday! While I was on a blog break, I actually made some time to create this origami card tutorial for you. To me, it's not as complicated as it looks (really!), so I took lots of photos to help you step-by-step try to create one for yourself! Grab your coffee and let's get on to the tutorial!

All you need for the base of the card itself is one 8 1/2" X 11" paper, the kind that you use in your printer. Fold the paper in thirds, trying to be as even as possible, otherwise you may end up with a lop-sided card. Don't stress out on this sample that you are making. Next, fold as shown below and repeat the same fold on the other side
so that your paper now looks like this. Are you still with me?? Easy so far, right?!
Fold as shown below making sure that you make nice creases so that the next step will be easy.
Open up your paper and fold in as shown.
Here's a closer look as to what it should look like.
If you are actually folding your card right now, the next photo is what your card should look like so far. If you are only viewing it right now, the next photo will not make any sense to you until you are actually following along with your project. Anyway, this is what you end up with after the fold in the previous photo. Next, fold in as shown below on both sides.
This is what your card should look like at this point.
Now flip your card over and pull down the folded middle section so that you can repeat the same folds above on the other side.
This is the other side. When you are doing that same fold as 2 photos above, it will look like this.

Here's the other side...
Grab the two flaps as shown here. We are getting ready to pull open the card to form the box - this is the exciting part!
Holding those two flaps, firmly pull open the card. It will look kind of squishy and out of shape but don't worry, you will straighten it all out after you puff open the card/box.

Once you open it up, straighten out the card/box as shown below.
Ta-da! You did it! Here is the finished card/box. I call it a box because it kind of looks like a box bottom, don't you thnk??
If your card didn't turn out too well, or doesn't look anything like the photo, start again! Don't give up! I have to tell you that I tried many, many times before I got the hang of it. I took apart a sample that someone made for me and studied the folds. If you would like a real live sample to follow, send me a private email requesting for a sample and I will fold one and mail one to you! Be sure in your email that you give me your mailing address. Now, shall we embellish and finish up the card?? Cut two strips of DP measuring approximately 2 3/4" X 5" You should measure the flap on your card before cutting the DP to make sure that your strip will fit on your card. I made some adjustments to my card and my strip ended up being 2 7/8" X 5" . I used the Bella Rose DP here.
For my stamped design, I used Dandelion Designs Maddy & Snowman (C102) and mounted it on a rectangle nestie (close to cocoa CS). I put a stronger adhesive on the left side only.
Adhere your piece to the left side of the box as shown here.
And this is what it should look like
Cut a piece of white cardstock approximately 3 5/8" X 4 7/8" or make adjustments to fit the inside of your card/box. Stamp and write your message on your piece before putting it in the card.

Not too bad, right?? Here's the finished card...

Images - Dandelion Designs Maddy & Snowman (C102) and Sentiment - Everyone Smiles by Stampendous and Be Happy by SU (smile)
Cardstock - Close to cocoa, pink piroutte, chocolate chip
Accessories - regal rose 5/8" grosgrain ribbon, 1 3/8" and 1 1/4" circle punches by SU, regal rose ink, dazzling diamonds and rectangle nesties (large)
Images colored using my copic markers and SU Sahara Sand (for Maddy's pants)
I made this card for my friend Barbie's sweet daughter, Sunny (Hi Sunny! did you get my package yet?!) Sorry that this tutorial was so long but there was no way to shorten it without showing you all of the steps. I hope I didn't scare you away with this!! haha! LCWC #19

Today is Tuesday and time for LCWC #19! I'm back after a much needed rest from just everything!! Thank you so much for all of your kind comments in the past week while I was resting to get rid of my cold! Well, here is the sketch for this week's challenge. I'm so honored to be asked to select a sketch and I actually had a hard time finding one that was easy enough for me to ease me back into the creating mode. I found this simple but fun sketch from Card Positioning Systems and you can find more awesome sketches on their site HERE
I wanted to use this cute whipper snapper image called Warm Penguin so had to flip the sketch to it's side to create my card this week.
Supplies I used: Blue for the base of the card is by Bazzill. Other CS used - brilliant blue, tempting turquoise, kiwi kiss.

Special Birthday Card

Short post today. I can't believe that I got sick AGAIN! I guess with this weather and me running around like a crazy lady, it was destined to get me again!! Is this a warning to slow down? Anyway, this past weekend, CUTE STUFF (in Puck's Alley) celebrated it's 11th birthday!! I made a card for Lianne. One of my favorite Whipper Snapper stamps! I learned this cool card from my SU upline Cindy B. one year. It's an origami fold card and opens up like this:
Cool, huh! I'll see if I can do a simple tutorial to show you how. That's of course when I feel better. I will be taking a short break from blogging so I can get well and take care of my holiday gathering details. I will be having a fun gathering with lots of projects, yummy food and fun in December, so stay tuned!

LCWC #18

Happy Tuesday! It's LCWC time and we are at #18. This week, the challenge was a little different. We had to create a christmas card using a family photo or a family member photo...I was tempted to use a Mochiko photo because I just realized that we don't have any recent family photos!! I guess since it's holiday time now, we will be taking more family photos!! Anyway, can you believe that this photo is two years old? Anyway, here is my take on this week's challenge.I've always wanted to make a pink card, but got voted out cuz I'm the only girl here...boo-hoo!! Today was my chance to show them that pink is really a nice color and I did use some chocolate chip in there too!

Creating with cheap-o stamps

Last week, Wini and I dropped in J's Knicknacks just to check it out. We weren't planning to buy, but when I saw this, I just had to have it! It was a cute Santa stamp and the best part is that it was only $1.25!! My wallet was still smiling! I'm not sure if J's still has more, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere! Here's what I made with the stamp...easy coloring...these will be turned into tags.

Just wanted to post that if you were waiting for the ATG gun and tapes to go on sale, I saw it on sale at Fisher Hawaii (Cooke Street store) for $35.95 . The tapes were only $2.95 each...Just thought you would like to know.

Mr. Snowman, oh how I love snowmen...

The air has gotten a little chilly lately, but not enough for snow -haha!! I would freeze to death if we had snow. It is chilly (to me) so I guess I'll have to take out an extra blanket for tonight. Anyway, this is the last project we did at the gift card holder class last week. This is spin off from those Frankie boxes everyone was making for Halloween, including me! I wanted to create a Christmas treat box and initially was going to create a Santa. Then, I decided to do a snowman. I see other versions of Mr. Snowman in blogland, all are so cute! Anyway, I got the instructions to make this cute treat holder from Cambria's blog called Stamp a Little Love Baby...you can check out the instructions HERE Be sure to check out the rest of her fabulous ideas. She's copic certified!

As you know, she loves to sit and sleep on my paper cutter right? Well one night, I saw her sitting like this with her paws together. Looks like she's getting ready for bed and is saying a prayer, so cute huh (to me anyway...).

I've never seen her sit with her paws together like that so of course, I had to take a photo! Here's the close-up version.

Anyone holiday shopping yet? I'm going to try to make my gifts this year. Well, a bunch of them anyway! Come back tomorrow to see my bargain stamp that I bought from J's and what I did with them!
