tattoos

I just got this image from Christopher Clark from New York... He got my work tattooed on him, I think it looks pretty cool... here it is... The image is a bit small, but if you click it it will get bigger...

It was done by an artist named Christopher Brandli. I feel like I worded this email really strangely for some reason... i think I've been in front of the computer for too long...

The White Oak Inn

Last Saturday, we listed telephone numbers from a 1956 New Gretna telephone directory that brought back many memories of New Gretna old timers who are no longer with us. One of the telephone numbers, for the Oak Lawn Country Club on New York Road, presently Rt. 9, was a puzzlement to me, and I asked if anyone could help me identify the establishment. I got one Blog comment and an email from Don Maxwell. Both said that they thought the Oak Lawn Country Club was the old White Oak Inn.

I believe that they are correct; however, it would be nice to see some documentation regarding the building's use as the Oak Lawn Country Club. And what type of establishment was it? I suspect that was just a fancy name for a local watering hole. Hopefully, someone out in the Blog-O-Sphere may recall stopping in for a libation and maybe even remember who ran the place. If so, I'd love to hear from you.

The old Inn likely functioned as a speak easy during prohibition in the 1920's. I know that rum runners were prevalent in the area, according to some of our local baymen who may have also dabbled in the nefarious practice and always seemed to keep their boats just a little faster than the revenuers. There never seemed to be a scarcity of booze in New Gretna during prohibition. That's for sure!

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the origin of the old building. I've been told that the original structure was the farmhouse of old Sea Captain Dellwyn P. Crowley who was the grandfather of Delilah Crowley Cramer. My only recollection regarding Captain Crowley was his donation of the bell to the New Gretna School in the late 1800's as documented by the bell and accompanying plaque on exhibit in the school's foyer. It is likely the bell was placed in the school when it was built in 1899.

Capt. Dellwyn Crowley's old ship and farm bell is on display in the foyer of the Bass River Elementary School. (January 22, 2009 photo by Pete Stemmer.)

Sometime after the turn of the century the old Crowley farmhouse became the White Oak Inn. I haven't a clue as to how and when this transformation occurred.

The White Oak Inn, circa 1929, was originally the farmhouse of Captain Dellwyn P. Crowley. (Photo courtesy of Franklin W. Gray.)
When I first moved to town in the early 1970's some older locals told me that "some years ago" the White Oak Inn building belonged to Father Divine, a black missionary preacher from Philadelphia. They called it one of his Heavens which was a boarding house where his teachings were practiced and where his followers could obtain food and shelter as well as spiritual and physical healing. During the Depression residents of the Heavens paid the minimal fee of 15 cents for meals and a dollar per week to sleep.

No one specifically told me when Father Divine was involved in New Gretna; however, I got the impression that it may have been in the late 1930's or early 1940's when he was living in Philadelphia. I am uncertain as to whether Father Divine ever personally visited New Gretna, but it is likely that he had due to its proximity to Atlantic City.

It is uncertain if George Baker, aka Father Divine, ever made a personal visit to his Heaven in New Gretna. (Photo from Google Images.)

My only experience with the old White Oak Inn was remembering it as an apartment house, on the north-east corner of Route 9 and East Greenbush Road, in the late 1980's through 2004.

The old White Oak Inn building in 1983. It functioned as an apartment house through the fall of 2004. (Photo courtesy of Sara Mathis Guertler.)

In September, 2004 the old White Oak Inn building was demolished. Following are some photos taken on September 9, 2004, just before it was torn down. A few of the photos show some interesting architectual accents. It must have been something to see in it's hayday!

Ready to rumble.

Today, the lot where the Crowley farmhouse, later the old White Oak Inn, stood is empty. Nothing remains to indicate that a part of New Gretna history once stood here.

The empty lot where the old white Oak Inn once stood. Perhaps we can get my history buddy, John Yates, to stop by with his GPS and record its exact location for posterity. (Map from Google Maps.)

That's about all I know about the old White Oak Inn. It sure is a project that needs more research. Hopefully, we'll be revisiting it in the future as more information surfaces.

Cute lil' holder and a tutorial for it!

This idea popped in my head one day as I was looking to make something cute to hold the photo CD I was giving to Cheryl after we went out to her bday lunch. I know it might sound silly to want to make something just for a CD, but you know me! Here's what I came up with for Cheryl's CD. I used the leftover DP from her card and one of the Ketto images that I had on hand already colored!
Ooh! Also want to share with you the really awesome stamp set I bought from my GF Jean who is a CTMH (Close to my Heart) consultant. Don't you just love the words in this set?? I used Captured Moments for Cheryl's bday photo CD; pretty perfect for the occasion. To order this really awesome stamp set, you can contact Jean HERE...
I loved this CD holder so much (because it was super easy to make!) I made another one to send to my GF Michelle. Here's the one I made for Michelle.
Love this Greetings Farm image, I think her name is Dahlia? The sentiment is a Hero Arts clear stamp and the bling is also from a Hero Arts mini stamp set that came with this flower bling!
Because this holder is so easy to make, I want to share how to make it with you!

Start with a piece of cardstock 6 1/2" X 11". Score 1/2" from each side (portrait), turn the CS and score at 5 1/4" and 5 3/4" (landscape).
Make small cuts just up to the 1/2" score line as shown on both sides. Sorry my photo is using a different colored CS. I forgot to take a pic of this step when I was making the yellow holder...
Place adhesive as shown.
Adhere the sides.
It should look like this when you adhere both sides.
For the cover, cut a piece of DP 5" X 5 1/2". Score at 3 1/2" and 4".
Add adhesive to the small flap as shown.
Adhere to box.
Put a strip of adhesive on the inside of the flap.
Add a piece of ribbon over the adhesive to make a handle.
Then, add a small piece of velcro. Here I added the image on a circle so I placed the velcro on the circle.
Fold the cover closed so that the other portion of the velcro sticks to the box.
That's it! You can make this box any size by following the same instructions with smaller cardstock.
Here's the close-up of the image...
Thanks for sitting through my tutorial! I hope some of you will try it out. These little boxes make great holders for little treats! It's the start of a new week! Short week for me - 4th of July celebration at the end of the week, so we have Friday off...

Sneak Peek for July's card class!

Announcement for July's class - THE CLASS HAS MOVED TO SATURDAY, JULY 11 AND SUNDAY JULY 12. I totally forgot about the 4th of July weekend. Some of you go on picnics or spend time with your family. Not that I wasn't planning to, but I though moving it to the following week might be good since my first furlough day will be on Friday, July 10 and I am planning a small gathering for anyone who could attend. That announcement will be in a day or so... On to the sneak peek!
My July class will be featuring all of the NEW IN-COLORS and some of the new stamp sets as well. THE NEW CATALOG IS OUT and I will have them for sale at the class if you did not receive one yet. Here's a sneak peek of the cards we will be making. We will be making 2 thank you cards, 2 thinking of you cards and 2 sympathy cards. I finished them all on Saturday night and was very pleased with the results. I know you will love them too! If you are interested in joining me for my July card class on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday July 12 at my home (1:00 to 4:00 p.m.), please RSVP either by posting a comment here or sending me an email. If you are a new attendee to my classes, be sure to remind me to email you directions to my home. I will be making 20 kits only and reservations for a spot will be on a first come, first served basis so if you know you want to come to this class, RSVP now! Cost for this class is $20 if you are attending and $25 if you are ordering a kit. If you RSVP and not show up, your payment will still be expected and you will receive your kit. Demonstrators who are interested in attending will also need to RSVP as the classes are combined with demos and customers. You will pay your demonstrator fee. Please be sure to bring your tool kits with you. Bringing your own adhesive and tools are important as I do not have any inventory to sell to you at the class. And finally, just a reminder that sometimes, the traffic into Waimanalo can get a little heavy, so please allow some extra time to get to the class.
Had to share this pic of Mochiko. Whenever I work on my craft table, she HAS to sit with me and for some reason likes my cutter!! It's a good thing I have 2 cutters. Doesn't she look exhausted?? That's how I felt after finishing all of the cards last night!! haha! Aahhh, the life of a cat!
I hope to see you at my class on July 11 and 12. I will also have a bunch of retired stamp sets for sale!

It's finally here!! Can you guess??

It's the new Stampin' Up! 2009-2010 Idea Book and Catalog!! Whoo hoo!! I am just drooling over all of the new stuff in here!! If you are interested in purchasing a catalog from me, please send me an email. Although I ordered a good amount, I may run out (I will order more when I run out), so if you are interested, please send me an email to reserve yours today! July's class will feature many of the new items from the new catalog including the all-new in colors!! You won't want to miss it!

Bug-a-boo Gatefold card and a rak!

Just love these cute bug-a-boo images. Got my bug-a-boo (set of 3) stamp set over at Tamiko's...Joy said that she just got in some new Greetings Farm stamps so head on over girls! Sorry that I'm still posting gatefold cards. After this one, there's only one more (for now!). Up close...
Got this super cute rak from my GF Joy. She made this cute crayon box and stuffed it with some goodies. I just love this superstar anya! and my favorite blossoms too!! Thanks Joy!! Hope you are having a fun time in Vegas!!

Hope you are having a fun weekend. I'm so exhausted from a very long week and spent all day creating the cards for July's class. I will be posting a sneak peak for the class and also have finished up the partnering for July's OCS! Working on emails tomorrow! I'm also putting the finishing touches on my tutorial for a cute lil' box that I made...come back soon, k? Thanks for your visit!!

The Twilight Zone Comes to New Gretna

I pick up the mail for Ben and Elaine Allen and drop it off at their Adams Avenue home a few times a week. One of the many benefits I receive is the opportunity to speak with them about their memories of old time New Gretna. Ben was born in New Gretna a little over 90 years ago and has spent all of his life here with the exception of serving in the Pacific during World War II. His body is getting frail, but his memory is as sharp as a tack. He and Elaine are my most reliable source of verifying New Gretna history. Each of my visits with them is precious and like having my personal New Gretna History Encyclopedia.

Like other New Gretna old timers, Ben and Elaine cling to many of the old New Gretna ways. I'm often reminded of this when we're talking in the living room and the telephone rings. They still have the old black, clunky rotary phone from the 1950's. No modern push button phones for them! I marvel every time I see Elaine pick up the receiver. It looks like it weighs more than she does.

The other day when I was visiting with Ben and Elaine, the phone rang, I got to thinking about that old phone and one of my favorite old television shows, the Twilight Zone. If we could combined the two, we would have some great plots where Ben and Elaine are stuck in a telephone time warp. They are only able to make and receive calls to telephone numbers listed in an old 1950's New Gretna telephone book.

Those telephone numbers, taken from a April 15, 1956 Telephone Directory on exhibit at the Tuckerton Historical Society, are listed below. In our Blog Telephone Twilight Zone, suppose they are the only people Ben and Elaine can reach back in time and talk with on that old black phone.

Many of the names should be familiar to our regular Blog readers. If you were visiting with me in Ben and Elaine's living room and had the chance to use their old black phone, who on the list would you like to make a call to? Think of the possibilities. If Jim McAnney were to call his father, Ruby, and Jim McAnney from 1956 answered the phone, could Jim talk to himself? Rod Serling would be proud!
