cider

I meant to post this a long time ago, but kept forgetting until now...

My friend Adrienne has been making cider for a little while now... I used to live with her and having cider in the house all the time was a bit of a problem because I'd drink really good and really cheap cider everyday after being in the studio and then I started to get a bit fat... Anyway, it's really good, and if you live in Toronto you should buy some from her...

Here is her blog to contact her through: adriennekammerer.blogspot.com

The label was drawn by our friend Jesjit Gill, here is his blog: jesjit.blogspot.com/

Also, I've just finished work for a fair in Paris, and taking a tiny bit of a break for the week... Actually, I'm soundproofing my apartment, so it's not really a break, but it's a break from the studio... My friend just lent me an old PC to check my mail on, and I have around 200 emails to reply to... If you have emailed me in the last 2 months and I have not yet replied, I apologize... I am going through all of them now, and will rely to you as soon as I can...

I have a big update coming soon, I'll include some photos of the opening...

Birthday Hugs & Wishes

Happy Friday! It felt like such a loonnnnggg week for me! here is the final Kitty I cut out with my Cricut (Hello Kitty Greeting cartridge) and the 3M fully adhesive craft paper. I cut this Kitty's head at 3 1/2" - I think it's a pretty good size to work with. I used the Kitty head on a birthday card for a friend's birthday card as she is celebrating today! I wanted to make a special card, so I followed the template and instructions by Brenda. We all call Brenda the "punch art queen" for her awesome talent creating the neatest projects using punches. Want to be inspired? Check out Brenda's blog HERE. Thanks Brenda for the template and instructions. I loved making this card! It's Brenda's version of the Double Display card. Here's the card closed. And here is the card opened. The DSP is by SU. I used my Three Flower Punch by SU and added a bling in the center. I popped it up with stampin' dimensionals. I had a "stray" pink square nestie already cut out and sitting on my table, so it was perfect!
I'm so glad it's Friday! I'll be finishing up mail order class kits this weekend and working on sompe projects for my BBF Tamiko. Hope you find time to craft this weekend!

Hello Kitty Folder

Are you getting tired of my HK projects yet? Here's another project that I created using one of the Hello Kitty designs that I cut out on Monday. I really like cutting out these Hello Kitty pieces with the Cricut and I really enjoy using my Cricut when the pieces cut out perfect. I notice that the smaller pieces get all scrunched up which frustrates me so I thought that I would cut out some HK stuff LARGE. I've never cut out one of these HK heads before, so I'm thinking Large, hmm, 4 1/2" should be a good size and yikes! it came out pretty BIG! I didn't know what to do with it. Then the light bulb went on - I bought a plastic folder from Fisher Hawaii and created something similar to a scrapbook page using this large HK head, it turned out pretty good. This folder was neat because you can slip the page right in the front pocket.
I also wanted to show you that the adhesive craft paper is not only for cutting using the cricut. You can also use it with Sizzix dies. I cut out a couple of the daisies and it came out perfect! Here's how the page slides into the front of the folder.
A close up of the flower...
All other DSP are by SU except for the glitter DP I used to cut out Emiko's name. I used my Frankie Quickutz dies to cut out the name and my Martha Stewart heart border punch.
I hope to post another HK project tomorrow! I'm excited that so many island girls have said that they went down to Fisher Hawaii to buy this 3M craft paper. You will have alot of fun using this new craft paper. Having the adhesive on it is so convenient. I'm hoping to see some amazing projects soon in blogland! Happy Thursday!

Cecil Mathis' Paternal Grandparents- Joshua & Rebecca Grant Mathis

There is always quite a bit of interest in the Mathis family, as evidenced by the recent questions regarding Cecil Mathis. We pretty much covered Cecil and his immediate family in our last Blog entry, where we also gave family information for his parents, Leon Hilliard and Verda Mathis, and his paternal grandparents, Joshua and Rebecca Grant Mathis. Their family information is reproduced below, so that you do not have to page back to last Wednesday's Blog to refresh your memory. It was transcribed from the family history from Jean and Murray Harris' "The Mathis Family of Little Egg Harbor".
Joshua H. Mathis, son of Aaron (2020) and Zelphy (Anderson) Mathis, born September 1863, died August 21,1921, married, in 1892, Rebecca A. Grant, daughter of Abraham and Matilda (Goldy) Grant, born at Chatsworth March 2, 1874, died February 16, 1963. He lived on Greenbush Road and worked in a sawmill. They are buried in Miller Cemetery, New Gretna. Children:

i Ray Etta, married (a) John Allen Jr. and (b) Harry Allen
ii Marjorie Nevada, married Benjamin Cavileer
iii Martha Elizabeth, married Leslie Parker
iv George W., married Jennie Brown
v Leon Hilliard, married (a) Betty Baker and (b) Verda Mamie Mott
vi Esther Mathilda
vii Adelia Margaret, married Arlington Conrad
viii Clarence Lloyd, born November 15, 1911, died August 29, 1974, married Margaret Ford, no children, buried Miller Cemetery
ix Herbert Franklin, married Kathryn Radar
Today, I thought that I would put a face on Joshua and Rebecca Grant Mathis. Fortunately, I have photos of them from an old Mathis family photo album compiled by Sarah Allen Ware, the late wife of Howard Ware. Howard currently lives on North Maple Avenue and is well known around New Gretna for growing the best lima beans in the area. Sarah gave the album to Ben and Elaine Allen who loaned it to me so that I could scan the photos for our Bass River Photo History Collection. I thought I would share some of the photos here on the Blog, along with some census information which, together, shed some additional light on the family.

We find a 16 year old Joshua, at the time of the 1880 Bass River Township census, living at home with his parents, Aaron and Esther Mathis, along with two sisters and a brother. His father, Aaron, a farmer, is listed as being blind. In a few conversations I had some years ago with some New Gretna old timers, they referred to Aaron as "Blind Aaron". It appears that his affliction became a part of his name.

1880 Bass River Township Census

The first census that we see Joshua and Rebecca married is the 1900 census which finds them living in Shamong Township. I have no idea regarding why they were living there. Perhaps one of our Blog readers can help out there.

1900 Shamong Townhip, N.J. census

The snapshot of the family provided by the 1900 census shows that Joshua and Rebecca have been married for 8 years and have three girls- Ray, Margie, and Martha. Joshua, born in 1863, is 36 years old, tens years older than his wife, Rebecca. His occupation is listed as "Bayman".

The 1910 census shows that Joshua and Rebecca have moved to Bass River Township and live on East Greenbush Road with a growing family which now includes 6 children - Ray, Neveda (Listed as Margie in the 1900 census), Martha, George W., Leon, and Delia.

1910 Bass River Township census

Joshua and Rebecca's home on East Greenbush house is no longer there. Elaine Allen described its location to me over the telephone. I hope that the following map accurately shows where the old Joshua Mathis homestead sat. If not, I'm sure that I will hear from Elaine, in which case I will revise the map.

Joshua and Rebecca Mathis' old homestead on East Greenbush Road
was not far from the present New Gretna Parkway exit.
Map courtesy of Bing Maps.

The last census where we find Joshua and Rebecca is the 1920 census, as Joshua died on August 21, 1921. Changes have occurred in the family. Ray, Marjorie Nevada, and Martha are no loner living at home and Clarence and Herbert have joined the family since the 1910 census. The family is still listed as living on East Greenbush Road.

1920 Bass River Township census

Having lost her husband, Joshua, on August 21, 1921, we find Rebecca, in the 1930 Bass River Township census, still living in Bass River Township but having moved to New York Boulevard (Now Rt. 9) with only sons Clarence and Herbert living at home. Clarence is listed as a State Forest laborer.

Following are some photos of Joshua and Rebecca Grant Mathis. Next Wednesday, we'll follow up with photos of some of Joshua and Rebecca's children.

I find these first two photos interesting as they show Rebecca Grant Mathis with her sister, Rachel, at a young and old age.

Joshua and Rebecca had quite an influence on our area's genealogy, as evidenced by their children, 25 grand children, and 43 great grand children mentioned in Rebecca's obituary.

That ends today's little journey back in time to visit with Cecil Mathis' paternal grandparents, Joshua and Rebecca Grant Mathis. Be sure to join us next Wednesday for some photos of their children.

PS- Beverly, The above are some more photos from the Mathis photo album that you have been so interested in.

The Armory and no computer

Just a quick post to say that I'll have work in the Armory Show this year with Fredericks and Freiser Gallery at Pier 94... It runs from March 4th - 7th, you can check out their website HERE.

Also, last week I spilled some water on my computer and now it's dead.... Sorry to anyone who has emailed me since my show, I'll reply to everything as soon as I can, hopefully within the next couple of weeks... I never realized how inconvenient studio life can be without a computer, I'm just happy that I saved my hard drive.

Lots has happened since my last post; my solo show opened in New York, Jamiyla and I had the bus ride from hell trying to get back to Toronto, we moved into a new place together right beside my studio, I've made new work for a fair in France, I found a taxidermied frog... Once I get a chance to sit down at a computer for longer than a few minutes, I'll do a big post...

More Fun with my 3M Craft Paper and Hello Kitty!

Here's another project that I created with my new 3M fully adhesive craft paper. I made another Hello Kitty using my Cricut. I still can't believe how easy it is to use because I think half of the battle when creating with tiny pieces is getting the adhesives on it and sticking it to your project. I love this peel and stick. Since Easter is right around the corner, I decided to make a basket using my HK creation. This basket is called the Pillow Box Bucket and it uses the SU pillow box die. You can download the instructions HERE - got this from Splitcoast Stampers. Here's another view of my bucket. I used a fairly new MS punch that I got from J's. All cardstock and DSP used for my bucket is by SU.
Come back tomorrow to see another fun project using my craft paper! I hope you were able to run down to pick up your paper from FH. I'm now thinking that I need to get other colors before the sale ends. Maybe I'll see you there!

Love that 3M Craft Paper and Hello Kitty!

I've been meaning to create with my 3M full adhesive craft paper for a month now, but let's just say that I've had some detours in my plans. So last night, I told myself that I just had to get down to business and create with my 3M craft paper and my Cricut!
Once I got started, I had so much fun. I knew that I wanted to use this adhesive paper to make my Hello Kitty projects because there are so many l.ittle pieces. Let me tell you guys that I just LOVE that this paper already has the adhesive on it because after you cut it out with your cricut, you just peel and stick! No mess, no fuss - promise!
Here's the card that I made. I used the 3M craft paper for every part of this card including the background. The dotted background was created by placing a piece of the 3M craft paper in my Sizzix embossing folder and then gently sanding it with a sanding block. Since this craft paper has white core, you can see the white after I sanded it. I love the look! This craft paper is also good to use with your nesties. I used my Blossom nestie to cut out the flower background behind the Kitty. I also cut out the ovals with my oval punches. The weight of this paper is a good one because it's so easy to use with the cricut, embossing, punches, nesties. Here's a closer look...
So I bet you all NEED this paper now, right? Good news! It's on sale right now til the end of the month at FISHER HAWAII. It's available at both stores, but the Cooke Street store has a bigger selection. This craft paper is located in the scrapbook section right above those 12X12 paper racks in boxes...you can't miss it! The best part is the price. It on sale for only $5.29/pack of 6 sheets. Because I knew that I was going to be making a bunch of Hello Kitty projects, I purchased a pack of white, black, pink... If you can't make up your mind on what color, they also come in assorted colors by color groups (pastel, bold, earth, regal). Here's what the paper packs looks like...
Oh! I found another cool adhesive too. Remember the tape runner by creative memories? This one is just like it! Of course, it's by 3M. I was lucky to get one to try out and I love it! I'll get a closer shot of the tape and why I love it in another post.
I'll be posting more cute Hello Kitty projects this week. I was having so much fun cutting out HK's that I cut out a bunch of other Hello Kitty images using my craft paper. The hardest part is figuring out what to put them on! See you soon!

Cecil Mathis

There was a question posted in the Comments section of last Wednesday's Blog, asking if Cecil Mathis was related to Catherine Mathis who had just passed away. Elaine Allen called me this morning from her son and daughter-in-law's home (Mike and Helen) in Alabama with the answer. The answer is YES.

Cecil was the nephew of Herbert Mathis, Catherine Mathis' husband. That would make Catherine Cecil's aunt through marriage. Elaine's would have first hand knowledge of Cecil's pedigree as her late husband Benjamin Austin Allen's mother, RayEtta Mathis, was Herbert Mathis' sister (See Joshua H. Mathis' family genealogy below). Getting complicated, isn't it? That would make Bennie Allen and Cecil cousins. It's amazing how the Mathis family was so intertwined throughout the community in the old days. They all can keep it straight, but I need a score card!

Cecil Mathis (1928-1992)
Photo courtesy of Ben and Elaine Allen.

Cecil was the son of Leon Mathis, Sr. with Leon's first wife, Verda:
Leon Hilliard Mathis, son of Joshua H. and Rebecca (Grant) Mathis, born May 9, 1904 at Atsion, died September 25, 1976 at Manahawkin, married (a) October 1, 1924 Verda Mamie Mott, daughter of Joel Milton Sr. and Florence Virginia (Quinn) Mott, born September 28, 1906, died April 26, 2002 and (b) Elizabeth S. Baker, born 1912, died January 19, 1971 and (c) Awilda Lippincott. Leon was a supervisor of public works and lived on Stage Road, Tuckerton. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery there. He had five children with Verda and four with Betty.

i Leon Jr., married Lorraine --- (died 1999)
ii Cecil Allen Milton, born January 22, 1928, (died 1992)
iii George W., born November 14, 1929, married Mary --- (lives in Farmville, VA in 1999)
iv Mary, married --- McGill, live in L/E.H. in 1999
v Charles (adopted by Luker) (lives in Hanover Indiana in 1999)
vi Clarence, married Patricia Klein
vii Helen, married on October 8, 1966 William White, son of George White of Tuckerton, (lives in L.E.H. in 1999)
viii Margaret M., married --- Boyd, and lives in Southampton in 1999
ix William J. (lives in L.E.H. in June 1999)
Cecial was 2 years and 2 months old at the 1930 Bass River Township census, below, which showed him living on Greenbush Road with his parents, Leon and Verda Mathis, and an older brother, Leon, and a younger brother, George. The house has since been torn down. It was just a stone's throw from where Herb and Catherine Mathis lived.

1930 Bass River Township Census

Cecil's father Leon Mathis, Sr. and Herbert Mathis, Catherine Radar Mathis' husband, were brothers. That would make Cecil Herbert's nephew.
Joshua H. Mathis, son of Aaron (2020) and Zelphy (Anderson) Mathis, born September 1863, died August 21,1921, married, in 1892, Rebecca A. Grant, daughter of Abraham and Matilda (Goldy) Grant, born at Chatsworth March 2, 1874, died February 16, 1963. He lived on Greenbush Road and worked in a sawmill. They are buried in Miller Cemetery, New Gretna. Children:

i Ray Etta, married (a) John Allen Jr. and (b) Harry Allen
ii Marjorie Nevada, married Benjamin Cavileer
iii Martha Elizabeth, married Leslie Parker
iv George W., married Jennie Brown
v Leon Hilliard, married (a) Betty Baker and (b) Verda Mamie Mott
vi Esther Mathilda
vii Adelia Margaret, married Arlington Conrad
viii Clarence Lloyd, born November 15, 1911, died August 29, 1974, married Margaret Ford, no children, buried Miller Cemetery
ix Herbert Franklin, married Kathryn Radar
Cecil's obituary tells us that he was born in New Gretna, married Joyce C. Leek; had two sons and five daughters; lived in West Creek; was a bayman; drove a truck for Eagleswood Township; died April 4, 1992 after a brief illness, and is buried in West Creek Cemetery. It is likely that he was buried without a tombstone, as the West Creek Cemetery listing that I have does not list a Cecil Mathis as being buried there.

Cecil Mathis served in the military during peacetime.

If anyone has any photos of Cecil's wife and children, let's hear from you. They would be welcomed additions to our Bass River History Photo Archives.

Well, that's about all I know of Cecil Mathis. Hope it was helpful.

Birthday Cards

Celebrated a couple of birthdays today! Here are the cards I made using my Pure Innocence images that I bought a while ago. This first card is for my GF Linda. I used some DP from a 6X6 stack that I had in my cabinet for a long time! Oval nesties and bling. This card actually came together right before I left to catch the bus...I work better under pressure! LOL! I made this next card for my GF Joy. For the side border, I used my MS heart border punch, rectangle nesties and a flower with brad. Sentiment was typed on the computer. Images were colored with copics.
Hoping to finish up with my cleaning and have creating with my cricut and the 3M full adhesive craft paper today. I'm planning on making our favorite Kitty! Hope you are getting some crafting in your weekend! Thank you for your comments and for making me smile!

Wedding Card

Happy Friday! These short weeks are the hardest at work. Making up for the day off we had on Monday. TGIF!
Last week, my niece got married in front of the Judge. The Judge just happens to be the hubby of one of the attorneys that I work with. (Congrats Jayme and Ryan!) so here is the card I made for them. Simple and sweet, just like the newlyweds. I love this stamp by Stampendous, not much coloring to do, which is good for me! I used Bermuda Bay cardstock and some silver paper I had in my stash. The punched side border is SU's eyelet border punch, one of my faves! Many of you asked about those plastic tubes that I used for my Valentine Treats. I got them from a local business called Islands Marketing located at 1218 Kaumualii Street across from Honolulu Community College. The tubes cost 70 cents each. Islands Marketing carries tons of wonderful items including all sizes of cellophane bags and sealers. Check them out if you are in the area.

Valentine Treats

Before I share with you the Valentine Treats that I made for my friends at the HSFCU, I wanted to post this super duper cute rak that I got from 1luvnmama...I had problems loading this cuteness in my last post. Mama makes some of the cutest things! Loving the image by Pure Innocence too! Thanks mama! I know I posted a single clear tube with treats in it before, but wanted to share this photo with you. I made 13 of these for my friends at the HSFCU for Valentine's Day. I filled them with frosted animal cookies and also chocolate covered sunflower seeds. My GF Charlotte gave me some of the cutest bags at 1"X8" and my GF wini and Dad filled them up for me! They fit perfect in this tube.
The stamp set I [heart] hearts set (117010 wood, 118571 cling) is still available for purchase and $2.00 will be supporting our efforts to help the Haitian Diaster. I love it that the hearts in this set match with our punches. I love options! And don't forget, our sale-a-bration promotion is still going on! Don't miss your chance to earn FREE products for every $50 purchase (before tax and shipping). I want to THANK all of you who have made purchase through my SU website as well as ordering through me. Your business is very much appreciated.
I hope to be posting my list of classes for the remainder of the year soon. It's been a rough start of the year and is taking me longer than I expected to accomplish all that I need to do, so thanks for your patience!
Posting for this week will be sketchy...more unexpected things have come up, including a broken water heater and refrigerator! Boohoo! I am still cleaning up and organizing my craft room so Charlotte, I will post photos when it is all perfect and before I start working and mess it up again! LOL!
Thanks for your visit today and for supporting me through my blogging journey!

Catherine Mathis Passes On

Another cherished friend to many and a connection with "old" New Gretna has gone to meet her maker. Catherine Mathis (Actually her first name was Virginia, but she went by Catherine) passed away last Saturday at Seacrest Village in Little Egg Harbor. I knew Catherine from talking with her about old times in New Gretna at various New Gretna Friendly Seniors meetings. Although not a native, she was born in West Virginia, she lived off East Greenbush Road in the Bucto section of Bass River with her husband, Herb, for many years. The road is now called Catherine Lane. She was a delight to speak with and always seemed to have a smile. She will be missed by the many people that she touched in a wide variety of jobs that she held in the area over the years.

Happy Tuesday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Happy belated Valentine's Day and belated Chinese New Year wishes too!
I am so thankful for wonderful friends! Over the past month, I have been showered with so many beautiful and thoughtful raks! I wish I had the time to make things in return. I try, but there are so many things on my "To Do" list that I can't even begin to think adding more things to do! I'm also so ashamed that I didn't make the time to take photos of the raks so I can properly say thank you to everyone! So I am dedicating this post to my sweet friends and for their wonderful raks.
The Mama did it again...she makes the sweetest gifts! Thanks Mama for always thinking of me and making me smile! Don't know how you do it!

Sweet Valentine Treat Bag

My GF Cheryl and I finally were able to meet up for lunch after almost 2 months! We usually meet up once a week if time allows as it's kind of a good stress reliever to eat lunch with a GF - you know... eat, talk, shop! Anyway, so many things going on for both of us that we weren't able to hook up! Here's a little treat I made for Cheryl for Valentine's Day. I used my SU Sizzix XL die called Fancy Favor (115965) and thought I'd try to use those cute sweet treat cups (116802) in the window. I didn't put any edible treats in there cuz I couldn't stand to think that the treat bag would be destroyed just to get to the treats! The treats were in the bag! DSP is Patterns Designer Series Paper in Rose Red (116162). I filled the treat cup with dew drops (thanks Barbie!). The image is from the cute stamp set called Fox and Friends(117020 wood, 118565 cling), so cute! I also used my new small heart punch - love the new style of punch. Flat, easy to store and use! You can check out these items in the Mini Occasions Catalog (link on my sidebar). It's a great time to shop too! Earn cool FREE items for your qualifying order of $50!
Here is closer view.
And a closer view of the sweet treats cup.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I'm getting ready for my first class of the year! Oh boy, out of practice! If you signed up for my classes this weekend, I'll see you soon!! I'll be posting my gifts for the CU girls tomorrow!
