A Night of Aloha!

On Monday night, my upline, Cindy Baughman, threw an awesome party for her downline to celebrate being a winner in the Workshop of a Lifetime contest. The winner who recruited the most new demonstrators would win a workshop with Shelli Gardner (co-founder of SU) and a gathering with her downline. Cindy was able to recruit 14 ladies! whoo hoo! Way to go Cindy!! We all benefitted from Cindy's success as we partied with Shelli and her hubby, Sterling at the Waioli Tea Room in Manoa. Everything was perfect! Here is a pic of a few of my downline and my buddy, Myra getting a photo with Shelli. I'll have more photos to share in a day or so...thanks for stopping in and Congrats to Cindy once again!

April Classes - need an estimate head count

April classes will be held on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday April 11 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at my home. I'll do a more detailed post about the class soon, but for now, I'm needing an estimate head count so that I can order the felt flowers. Each kit will contain on package of the pretty Sweet Pea felt flowers. I'm loving these flowers and am having so much fun using them! The class will be based around those flowers making cards like this one and more. Looking for a 3D project to do too...not sure if it will be "that box" yet, but you won't be disappointed. If you are interested in attending the April class, or want to order the "to go" kit, please send me an email. I will also need your class payment to help me with the cost of ordering all of these flowers. The class fee is $20 for attendees, $30 for to go kits and $10 for demonstrators. Another post coming soon! Mahalo!

Thanks for visiting and for your patience...seems like I need a barrel of that to help me through it all...

The John C. Budd Farm Ledger and the New Gretna Connection

My friend, Dick Ireton, alerted me to a farm ledger belonging to John C. Budd that contained a handwritten notation (See below) that reads "John C. Budd, Out West Rd., New Gretna, N.J." that recently appeared on EBay.

The ledger, with entries from 1856 - 1895, was advertised as being from New Gretna. Photos of some of the ledger pages are also presented. You can see the EBay auction listing by clicking on the link below. Hit your browsers Back Arrow to return to this page.

Note: I sent this Blog entry to the seller at EBay who has since corrected the title of the ledger from "1856-95 John C Budd Farm Ledger Book, New Gretna, NJ" to "1856-95 John C Budd Farm Ledger Book, West Deptford, NJ". He also has changed his summary comments from those presented below to reflect the information presented on the Blog.

Sample pages from the Budd ledger from EBay.

The ledger sure was a puzzlement to me, as the original auction summary comments regarding the ledger (See below) lists names that are clearly not New Gretna names. Not a Mathis, Cramer, French, Adams, Loveland, or Allen among them!
A vintage farm account ledger book dating from 1856 through 1895 of John C. Budd, West Road, New Gretna, N.J.. The ledger includes names of Thomas Budd, Branson L. Ore, Richard W. Howell, Abner Starn, Frank Snyder, David Paynter, Joseph Osgood, Henry Hendricson, Carles Carter, Josiah Budd Jr., Jacob and William Myers, John Postol, Clement Raves, James Mickle Jr., B.P. Howell, Samuel Watkins Jr., Stewart Senior, Isaac Eldridge, Casper Budd, William E. Tatum, John M. Budd, Joseph Budd, Andes E. Budd, and others. There are 62 pages with about 10 pages of child doodling / alphabet practice, and the first page with pasted in recipes. about 6 pages are torn with some of the 2 cent Internal Revenue stamps cut out. Lots of 2 cent stamps still on the pages. Signed in ink on front of book: John C. Budd and on back of book: John C. Budd Day Book.

I did some research on the ledger writer, John C. Budd. He was clearly from the John C. Budd farm in West Deptford, and not from "out West Road in New Gretna", as his wife's name Emma L. appear both in the ledger and the 1880 census..

I thought that identifying one of the persons mentioned in the ledger as also living in the West Deptford area wouId confirm the ledger's origin outside the New Gretna area. I choose one of the more unusual names, Branson Ore, to narrow down the possibility of there being more than one person with the same name. If he lived in the West Deptford area, that would pretty much confirm that the ledger was from the West Deptford area and not New Gretna.

The 1870 census information below shows that Branson Ore was, indeed, from West Deptford, thus confirming my theory. I suspect that if I had the time to check out the other names from the ledger, they would also be from the West Deptford area. The ledger entries clearly are not from the New Gretna area.

The 1900 West Deptford census (see below) also helps solve the mystery. It shows John M. Budd, who appeared in the 1880 census as John C. Budd's son, as the head of the household. John C., named after his grandfather, and Clifford are two of his sons and thus grandsons of the John C. Budd who kept the farm ledger now being auctioned on EBay.

Brothers John C. (Jack) and Clifford ended up living in New Gretna sometime after 1930 as they don't appear in the 1930 Bass River Township census. One of them, probably older brother Jack, brought their grandfather's ledger with them. The ledger notation which reads "John C. Budd, Out West Road, New Gretna, N.J." referred not to the original John C. who wrote the ledger but to his grandson, John C. "Jack" Budd who actually lived on West Road and was actually written two generations after the original ledger was penned.

Obituary courtesy of Shirley Whealton.

Both Veronica (1907-2001) and Cliff (1899-1986) are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Run. Jeanette (1938-1938), their daughter who was stillborn, is buried in the same plot.

I don't know much more about the Budd family in New Gretna nor do I have any photos of them. I'm hoping that someone out in the Blog-O-Sphere can tell me more about them and, perhaps, furnish a photo or two.

PS- Wednesday's planned Blog on the children of Joshua and Rebecca Grant Mathis may be a day or so late, due to me getting sidetracked on this ledger issue. But, hey, that's the fun of digging into this history stuff! Stay tuned!

Sabra Mathis- Daughter of Aaron Mathis, Jr.

Well, I'm finally beginning to get back into my normal routine after my recent health mishaps. I had left off with a statement that I would begin a series of postings on the children of Joshua and Rebecca Grant Mathis' children (See the Wednesday, March 3rd Blog entry.) I plan to start that series this coming Wednesday.

Meanwhile, I received the following photo of Sabra Mathis, the eldest child of Aaron, Jr. and Margery Kirkbride Mathis, and Joshua Mathis' elder sister, from George and Mary Mathis. I thought I would pass it along to you. Hopefully, those interested in the Mathis Family will find it an interesting addition to their Mathis genealogy photo collection.

Hum! Wonder if those are Sabra's biceps or just frilly dress sleeves? I bet five bucks that she could take Jim McAnny or Ricky "White Shoes" Steele in an arm wrestling contest. Any takers?

Sabra E. Mathis, daughter of Aaron and Zelphy (Anderson) Mathis, born 13 June 1861 at New Gretna, died 1943, married at Stafford Township 4 January 1882, Allen Hazelton Cranmer, son of Edward E. and Elizabeth Ann (Cook) Cranmer, born 16 December 1854 at Manahawkin, died 1926. Hazelton was a farmer in Eagleswood Township in 1915. They are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Run. Their children:

i Leon H. Cranmer, married Emily A. Garcelon.

ii Everett Wilson Cranmer, married Eunice Sprague.

iii Carrie M. Cranmer, married Eugene Kelly, son of Cornelius Kelly.

iv Nevada E. Cranmer, married William James Jones Jr.

v Thelma E. Cranmer, born July 1903, married Edward Kane before 1929.

Helping the Easter Bunny

Been hunting for an idea for Easter baskets and saw many, many great ideas. So I had some grand plans to make one that used the scalloped circle die. I made one and it turned out "okay"...as crafters, sometimes projects don't always turn out in a way that satisfys you, am I right? Well that's what happened to me. After sifting through all of my dies and supplies, I finally came up with this basket. This basket uses the Fancy Favor XL Sizzix die as the basket part. This is one die that I've made countless favors with and they all looked different by the way I embellished it. I also used the scalloped trim punch (still available for FREE with a qualifying order during our sale-a-bration promotion - hurry! sale ends on March 31st!) and the jumbo eyelets. Haven't used those in a while. Of course, the scalloped circle die and Sweet Pea felt flowers...I still have lots left in my package even after making all of those projects and cards. The beautiful sentiment is from a set called Well Scripted and I punched it out using the wide oval punch. Had to add some color to the sentiment oval, so used a few pink bling (sorrym, not SU). Here's a side view of the basket so you can have a better view of the handle.
Here's the close up of the sentiment oval and the felt flowers.
Thanks for stopping in today. I'm off to see some friends today and tonight is family pizza night - yay! I get a break from cooking! Hopefully, I will have the time to select the winners of the blog candy...are you excited?? Enjoy your Saturday!

BTW forgot to share this

It's been a while since I posted a pic of my silly kitty. She seems to have adopted this folding mattress as her "bed". During the day, she begs Dad to sleep on his bed. I can't imagine that she is comfortable, but I think she has a smile on her face...LOL!
What I wanted to share with you is what the hand punch looked like that I used to punch those tiny hearts out on my punch Easter bunny a few posts back. I have had several inquiries as to where I got it from and what does it look like. Saw it at BF yesterday.

A shout of Thanks for the raks!

Happy Aloha Friday! Today is a Hawaiian holiday - Prince Kuhio Day. Of course, being that I work for the State, I get a holiday! I have such a busy day planned, in fact, a busy weekend ahead as well...more to share after the weekend and don't forget, my winner announcement on Sunday, March 28th. You still have time to enter to win!
I've been accumulating some beautiful raks and only had some time now to take photos so that I can share them with the world. Shouting out many, many THANKS to these ladies for the fun raks I received! So thoughtful, all of you for thinking of little ol' me...I truly appreciate your kindness!
From Lynnelle. This cute strawberry was featured on my GF Michelle's blog some time ago...I'm sure the pattern is still there...check out her blog HERE. From Kelly T. Thanks Kelly! I love this sock monkey!! I've been looking for a sock monkey but never found one. And although the sock monkey is not Kelly's favorite, she remembered that it was MY favorite. This little guy is so cute, he keeps me company while I craft as he sits on my table!
From Brenda. Such cute, cute little gifts she brought to share when she came for one of my classes. Thanks Brenda! I love them all! Brenda IS the punch queen. Check out her creations HERE!
From Tammy. Love this sweet card! Thanks Tammy for your regular comments...you are just so sweet!
From Ilissa. What a fab card! I love the colors and all of the fine detail...thank you too for your regular comments...can't wait til you and T come to my class again!

Isn't this card clever?? From my GF Pam...I'm needing to CASE this one. Thank you, this pengy made me smile!
I am so overwhelmed with your kindness...all of these wonderful cards and goodies totally made my day! THANK YOU!

Scallop Square Swing Card

I had such good intentions of posting this card yesterday but ran out of time. Seems like that's been the latest "trend" in my life...running out of time! I've had this scallop square die on my table for the last week and wanted to make a card with it. Also toying with the idea of making a mini book with it too. I took the easy out and made the card - LOL! Cutting two scallop squares and holding it together with a rhinestone brad at the upper left corner makes it a "swing" card. To open the card, you swing the cover to the left.

I knew I wanted to make the base of my card pink so I cut the squares out in pretty in pink. I was so happy to find this nice piece of DP in my scraps. I liked how the design just worked right in to my card. This DP is from a set called Kaleidoscope and is still available in the IBC. I framed the DP with old olive and again used some Sweet Pea felt flowers.
You must be wondering why I'm in a felt flower kick?? Yup! I am leading up to something...if I'm able to get all of the flowers in on time, this will be part of my April class. We will be making cards and hmmm, maybe that box that I swore I would never make again! If not that box, we will be making some 3D project and embellishing it with the Sweet Pea felt flowers. Excited? I am!
Here's what the inside looks like. I love my small heart punch! This punch is available in the occasions mini catalog. I used the ticket corner punch on my whisper white CS.
Here's a little closer look at the card in action.
Thanks for stopping in today! I am enjoying myself reading all of your fabulous comments that you are leaving on my blog candy post. It's nice to finally "meet" some of you who were too shy to comment before. Just wanted to shout a THANKS to all of you who are participating!

Sweet Pea Little Box

Back to work Monday! Today I have a cute box to share with you. I was sitting on the couch trying to catch my breath from all of the house chores that I did yesterday when I saw a small box on the coffee table. It was a box that belonged to my son. The first thing I was thinking of was "that darn kid always leaving his things around the house!" and then that lightbulb went on! Hmmm, I like the size of this box, I wonder if I can make one? Sooooo, I took it apart (I managed to put it back together when I was done) to get a pattern. Cut, trim, score...voila! I made a cute little box.
I'm on a roll with these Sweet Pea felt flowers as you can see. Side view...
Inside view...I lined the bottom of the box so it wouldn't look so plain and the inside of the flap as well.
Although the box came out really cute, I think this will be a "one of kind" and will be my one and only...
Products I used:
Cardstock: pretty in pink, barely banana, regal rose
DSP: Spring fling, Pawsitively Prints
Accessories: Sweet Pea felt flowers, large oval, scallop oval and 3 flower punches
Stamp Set: Simple Friendship
Today is my 3rd blogaversary! I can't believe it's been 3 years already! I didn't think that I would be blogging for this long, but I have all of YOU to thank! You keep me going with all of your kind comments. I've made sooooo many friends through blogland too! To celebrate my blogaversary, I will be posting my blogcandy give away tomorrow...please come back to see what's in the stash of goodies!

Sweet Pea Birthday

I'm needing to make tons of birthday cards and thank you cards. I'm just so way behind in everything that I don't know how I'm going to get them all done! Ever had those mile long "to do" lists?? Well, after such a busy, busy Saturday, I forced myself (I really did!) to create a birthday card so I would have something to share with you all today. I know, I know, I hear my BFF's telling me that I'm mento (crazy) for forcing myself to create. Actually, I thought it was going to get me to relaxed and unwind, but it didn't really. Ho hum...anyway, here is the card I made. I loved how it turned out though. I love these new felt flowers and components. This item is called Sweet Pea Stitched Felt (#117266) and is in the Occasions mini catalog (expires on April 30). There are so many pieces to create your own bloom. Here's my Sweet Pea Bloom... Other products I used
Cardstock: chocolate chip, whisper white, regal rose
Accessories: Pinking hearts border, modern label punch, Perfect polka dots embossing folder, soft suede dotted grosgrain ribbon.
The card is really a simple one, but I love the sweetness the felt flowers brought to the card.
Here's a close up of the bloom...
Oh yeah, here's the inside...love to layer, somehow, it adds to the card don't you think?!
The sentiment on the outside and inside of the card came from a set called A Little Birthday Cheer (#120242) and you can get this set for FREE with a $50 order during the sale-a-bration promotion. This awesome sale ends on March 31st, so if you were thinking of getting in on some freebies, order now before the promotion is over! You can order online through my SU website (located on the side column) and the best part is that you can order 24/7!
Thanks for the visit today. Hope you all have a relaxing Sunday...that's what I'm wishing for!

Milk Carton Holder Tutorial, My Version

It's the weekend, yippee! As promised, here is my mini tutorial for this simple milk carton holder. I was hunting for a holder for our mini milk cartons that was simple to make. I came across one that was pretty much what I was looking for, but after making one, it was too big! At the time of my attempt, my GF Joy was over and helped me figure out the measurement so that two milk cartons could fit just right side by side. I wasted so much cardstock, but it was worth it! Here's what I made for my GF Cheryl (I posted this yesterday).
Here's a side view of the finished project.
So, today, I'm sharing my measurements and instructions to make the holder for the milk cartons. FYI, the milk carton die is a SU exclusive. When it was first released, I quickly ordered one and upon cutting it out thought, wow, this is so small! But I really LOVE the size now. Just the right size to put small candies/treats in them. BTW, have you seen the prices of Easter candies? I nearly fell down at Longs checking out prices. I guess I'll have to wait for the sale on Sunday.
Anyway, here we go! You will need 2 pieces of cardstock cut to size 5 3/8" X 7 1/4".

I did all of my scoring using my Fiskars cutter. I love this cutter because you can alternate the cutting blade and the scoring blade.
With the 5 3/8" side on the top, score 1" on each side.
OOPS! I JUST REALIZED THAT IN MY NEXT PHOTO, I DID NOT TURN THE CARDSTOCK...SO SORRY! I think you can still understand my instructions...
Turn the cardstock so that the 7 1/4" side is now on the top. Score at 1" and 2 3/4". This is the tricky part...move the cardstock to 3 3/4" line on your cutter, but ONLY SCORE TO THE 1" HORIZONTAL LINE. Can you see it at the arrows??
Put the 5 3/8" side on the top again and trip off part of the 1" strips on both sides ONLY TO WHERE YOU SCORED AT 3 3/4" so that your piece will look like this:
Trim the tabs to look like the photo. You don't have to trim the tabs, but it's less bulky when you put the tray together if you trim the tabs. Add adhesive as shown.
Form the trays on each piece. Next, adhere both trays to each other and using your large oval punch, punch out the handles as shown.
I decorated the sides of the try with DSP scraps (you will need four pieces cut at 3" X 3/4"). Decorate as desired.
That's it! Not too hard right? Give it a try and tell me what you think. Making the holder is easier than doing this tutorial! LOL!
I'm sharing with you again the project we did last weekend at my class.
For those of you who ordered my March class kits "to go", they are completed and are on it's way to you! Hope these instructions help you assemble your holder although I already cut and scored everything for you!!
If you decide to make this holder, please share with me your finished project, I'd love to see what you came up with.
Thanks for stopping by today. Yet, another busy weekend for me! Hopefully I'll be able to get more projects to share done!

Cased Bunny

Happy Aloha Friday! Now that we are used to furlough Fridays, I kind of dread working on Fridays - LOL! Today is the only Friday this month that we are working. I had grand plans to post the tutorial for my simple milk carton holder, but as I was prepping my post, I noticed that I was missing photos of a couple of steps. So instead of skipping those steps, I decided to wait to post that tutorial tomorrow. I apologize for the delay but if you're like me, I like to see every step on how to make a project in a tutorial so I know I'll be able to complete the project.
Last night, I decided to make another milk carton holder for my GF Cheryl since we are having lunch today. I decided to add a super cute bunny on the front of my holder. This bunny was created by using SU punches and of course, this idea came from my GF Brenda, who has been labeled the "Punch Art Queen!". Isn't this bunny the cutest?? Please check out Brenda's blog for more punch art inspiration. The sentiment is from a set called Well Scripted. Love the swirly font! DSP is called Pawsitively Prints and is the DSP designated to be used with our build-a-bears. Love the tiny prints.
I always look forward to the weekend hoping that I will be able to catch up on my craft projects! I'll be working on the tutorial for tomorrow's post. I hope you will come back! Thank you for your visit today. Your comments always puts a smile on my face!

I'm Back - Sort Of

I went into the hospital for a same day minor surgical procedure. Unfortunately, multiple complications developed, and I ended up spending the next nine days in the hospital. I came home two days ago and still have some recuperating to do. Hopefully, in two weeks, give or take a few days, I should be back to normal - whatever that is. Meanwhile, I can't say exactly when I'll be restarting the Blog on a regular basis, so stay tuned.

I want to thank all who sent cards, emails, etc. and offered prayers.

Blessings,

Pete
